We’re The Roadside Lupines.

A 4-piece folk band based out of Duluth, Minnesota (arguably the best place on earth).

After meeting in college in 2019 and having lots of impromptu jam sessions, we decided to form a band in 2023.

Our music is a mixture of heartfelt originals and lively covers, from Duluth’s own Trampled by Turtles to Shania Twain. Rooted in the North Shore, our name and music capture the spirit of life up north and the place we are so proud to call home.

Riley Altier (vocals & guitar)

Hi I’m Riley! My music journey goes something like this…

In second grade, my parents decided to put me in piano lessons- boy was that a great idea! I instantly fell in love with piano and it grew my love for music more than I could ever imagine- kickstarting my music journey! Thank you Mrs. Nass!!

I did choir throughout high school, where I uncovered my love for singing and performing! I continued to play piano in my free time and teach myself new songs, even making some of my own music!

Freshman year of college my roommate taught me how to play the guitar (Thanks Caleb!) A few years later, I used my fresh guitar skills to record, and produce my own EP!

Now, I get to write, sing, and play some awesome music with my best friends!

Kati Devitt (vocals & bass)

I have been surrounded by music my whole life! I grew up in the 5th generation of my family’s polka band, recording my first CD at 3 years old. Additionally, I’m shamelessly a theatre kid, and performed all the way through my first year of college!! I always stayed busy with voice lessons, band, and choir.

I still remember the exact moment Riley asked if I wanted to join the band. Although I can drum in the polka band, he asked if I would learn any other instruments we could use. That is where my bass guitar journey began and continues to grow! :)

I am so so thankful to continue on performing, it’s something I have never been without. Playing a new genre of music for a new crowd and with close friends is so exciting. Thanks for all your support!

Jason Coyle (violin & mandolin)

I picked up my first 3/4 sized violin (or fiddle, either name is welcomed) after spontaneously signing up for orchestra in 6th grade since it looked neat and was seemingly hard to play. Performed pretty often at church (movie scores included!), pops orchestra, and school/regional concerts up through my senior year of high school.

In February of 2023 I acquired my mandolin off Facebook marketplace and followed it up with an octave mandolin earlier this year.  It’s a blast to strum and electrify the mando as well as choose between the three instrumentation options when we work on developing a new tune!

I’m so honored to be making music with my best friends and grateful to share it in the Duluth music community!

Jamie Sturlaugson (banjo)

I started piano lessons with my grandmother when I was 8 years old! I asked her to teach me because I wanted to play the drums in the school band and I had heard that knowing piano would qualify myself to do so. These lessons with my grandma proved to be much more than that. It gave us so much time together and fostered the greatest memories between us. She got to share her passion with me and in turn, I learned to appreciate beautiful things.

Of course, this led me to play percussion in the school band and play guitar here and there as well (it was awesome).

One day at a lupine band practice Riley put a banjo down on the table… and I picked it up!!! It’s been so fun learning something new. Being a part of this group has given me so much joy and has let me use the gift of music my grandma gave me so long ago. I know she’s looking down on me smiling at every gig :)
